Celestron C5 Review: Is This Compact Beast the Ultimate Long-Range Camping Tool?
The Schmidt-Cassegrain Advantage: Big Power, Tiny Body
The C5 uses a complex system of mirrors and lenses to fold a long focal length into a short, stubby tube. This means you get the power of a giant telescope without the 4-foot-long pipe. It’s the ultimate “stealth” optic for your camper basecamp.
Why the C5 is the King of the Campsite:
- Huge 127mm Aperture: This 5-inch lens gathers a massive amount of light. While other scopes struggle at dusk, the C5 is just getting started.
- 50x Magnification Out of the Box: With the included 25mm eyepiece, you start at 50x. Because it’s a modular system, you can swap eyepieces to go even higher for stargazing!
- StarBright XLT Coatings: Celestron’s best optical coatings ensure that every bit of light makes it to your eye, providing stunning contrast and sharpness.
- Modular & Versatile: It’s not just for looking. The C5 is a world-class 1250mm f/10 telephoto lens. Attach your DSLR, and you’re ready for professional-grade wildlife photography.

C5 vs. Regal M2 100ED: Which One Wins?
At GoOutdoor, we recently raved about the Celestron Regal M2 100ED. So, why the C5? The Regal M2 is better for fast-moving birds due to its traditional “refractor” feel. However, the Celestron C5 is the clear winner for extreme distance and astronomy. With 127mm of aperture versus 100mm, the C5 is the heavyweight champion of light gathering.
What the Tribe is Saying
“I took this to Glacier National Park. I could see the individual rocks on peaks that were miles away. It’s basically a portable observatory.” — Trail-Master-Tom
“It’s compact enough that it lives under the bench in my camper. The image of the moon through this thing will change your life.” — Star-Chaser-Sarah
3 Tips for C5 Success
- Solid Ground: You cannot use this handheld. You need a solid, heavy-duty tripod or a specialized astronomical mount. Any vibration at 50x magnification will look like an earthquake.
- Acclimation: Let the scope sit outside for 20-30 minutes before viewing. Because it has a large volume of air inside, it needs to reach the outside temperature for the sharpest views.
- Terrestrial vs. Astro: Use the included 45-degree diagonal for wildlife viewing, but consider a 90-degree diagonal if you plan on looking straight up at the stars.
